This is not just a tourist destination, but a place where people still farm, dress up for church on Sundays, and distil the strangest schnapps in Austria made from turnips !
Located in the west of the Kitzbühel Alps, some two hours from Munich lies the Wildschönau valley. Wildschönau, meaning wild and beautiful, is a remote and high valley in one of the most glorious settings in the Tyrol.
Numerous small, very pretty typically Austrian villages and hamlets are dotted along the valley all linked by ski bus to the main ski areas of the Alpbach and Auffach ( the Ski Juwel ) and Niederau. The fairytale village of Oberau is home to a magnificent chapel, a handful of shops and some fine old buildings, our hotel, the Bergkristall in located in the small quiet hamlet of Muhltal just outside Oberau, some 2kms from the main ski area.

The two ski areas of Alpbach and Auffach sat side by side in one of the prettiest parts of the Tirol, for years there was talk of linking these two areas and finally, in 2012, with the opening of a new piste and state-of-the-art gondola, they finally did it and the Ski Juwel was born.
The result is a medium-sized ski area of 109 kms, ( 145 kms if you include Niederau ), 2 snow parks and 25 cosy ski huts. The skiing in the Juwel is particularly suited to beginners and intermediate skiers with a few black runs of rare quality for the more adventurous.
300 snow cannons provide Mother Nature with back-up, covering 85% of all pistes. Over the years the Juwel has won numerous awards and is now recognised as one of the top ten destinations in the Tyrol. Snow coverage is usually best during March, offering an average snow depth of 111 cms at summit elevation and 51 cms at the base.
Price wise, anyone who’s used to the eye-watering prices of Europe’s A-list resorts, the cost of holidaying here is a pleasant surprise, a beer in a mountain restaurant will set you back €3.50 and a proper cooked lunch is about €9.
If you are looking for a large happening ski resort with clubs, bars and discos providing the evening entertainment then this is not the place for you ! If however you are looking elegant and sophisticated family run hotel, with excellent food and service in a quite location away from the noise and clatter of modern life then the Hotel Bergkristall fits the bill perfectly.
Beautifully appointed rooms, sumptuous breakfasts, afternoon skiers snack, evening meals with more courses than you can count are all part of daily life at the Bergkristall. If you need a little relax after a day on the slopes the indoor pool with counter-current, steam bath, saunarium, sauna and Kneipp grotto should do the trick, massages are available upon request.
An evening stroll to the local micro-brewery,a small but lively venue with a great atmosphere and a beer catalogue as fat as a phone book is about at lively as it gets here, but the walk under the stars, in the crisp cold air and the total silence of the mountains is a thing of beauty !
